What is a German cockroach and how to tell them apart

German cockroaches are small, 12 to 15 millimetres long, tan in colour with two dark longitudinal stripes behind the head. Their wings extend beyond the abdomen but they do not fly. They congregate together in warm, undisturbed areas of high humidity, especially kitchens.

They are not the only cockroach species in Perth. American cockroaches are much larger (35 to 40 mm), reddish-brown and fast, and come up from drains and sewers. Australian cockroaches are similar in size to American cockroaches with yellow wing edges and breed outdoors in gardens, mulch and wood piles, wandering indoors through gaps under doors and weep holes. German cockroaches live indoors. If you see a small tan cockroach with stripes in the kitchen, it is almost certainly a German cockroach.
