Woodlands was one of Perth's original northern suburbs, developed from 1964 when Huntriss Road went through and homes went up on fifth-acre blocks. Most of the housing is still 1960s and 1970s double brick and brick veneer with timber roof framing, though the Floreat Lakes Estate added a newer pocket in the 1990s and two-storey rebuilds are now common on the larger blocks. The ground is Spearwood dune sand over limestone, with the low interdunal wetland at Jackadder Lake in the middle. Sixty-year-old timber framing on moist ground near the lake is a termite combination we take seriously, and the mature street trees on Oak, Elm and Birch give rodents a highway into the roofs.
Jackadder Lake, first recorded as Mews Lake in 1831, is a year-round wetland with a nesting island, reed beds and a healthy population of waterbirds, frogs, rats and mosquitoes. The homes around it, and along Sweeting Reserve and Woodlands Reserve, get the mosquito evenings and the autumn rodent movement first. Scarborough Beach Road on the northern boundary and Woodlands Village bring bins and food premises into the mix.
