Herdsman Lake was gazetted as a suburban area in 1928 and the ground around it was swamp and market garden until the northern side was dredged and filled in the 1980s to make way for Jon Sanders Drive and the office and showroom precinct around Walters Drive. That gives the suburb two kinds of building: modern slab-on-ground offices, warehouses and showrooms in the business park, and a lakeside strip of homes and villas on Herdsman Parade and Selby Street ranging from mid-century brick-and-tile to 1980s and 1990s two-storey townhouses.
