Scarborough grew fast after the war, when the Perth Road Board auctioned lots across the dunes and by the 1960s little land was left. The housing that survives from that era is a mix of early asbestos-clad timber-framed cottages, post-war brick homes set on limestone footings above ground level, and 1960s walk-up flats, with 800 square metre blocks south of Scarborough Beach Road and smaller lots to the north. The dunes run north to south parallel to the coast, white Quindalup sand at the front and yellow sand over Tamala limestone on the ridges behind.
